Child Abuse and Neglect Workshop
Goal:
The workshop will help community leaders identify resources, programs and
services which will positively impact the rate of child abuse and neglect
within individual communities.
- The participants will use professional experiences and community statistics to identify and list critical issues within the community which lead to child abuse and neglect. (20 minutes)
- The participants will utilize the internet, service directory, referral lists and personal experience to identify and list resources, services, and gaps in services which impact the identified issues within the community. (10 minutes)
- The participants will prioritize the list of identified issues based upon severity and accessibility of resources. (10 minutes)
- The participants will work together to create and record a minimum of (3) three "next steps" which will positively impact the identified issues. (20 minutes)
- The participants will assess the necessary resources to complete the "next steps" and categorize the resources in order of accessibility. (15 minutes)
- The participants will plan deadlines for the "next steps" to be completed. (10 minutes)
- The participants will select a date for a follow up meeting. (5 minutes)
Test and Essay Items
- In the small group activity, critical issues which lead to child abuse and neglect were discussed. Briefly describe three critical issues identified by the group. Write the issues in order of importance, from least to greatest importance. Describe the issue the group identified as the highest priority issue in greater detail and explain why the issue was given priority?
- The group utilized a variety of resources to identify gaps in services within the community. List three gaps in service identified by the group. Describe the solutions proposed to narrow or eliminate these gaps.
- The group was asked to list resources which will help overcome the critical issues. Identify three to five resources available to assist in overcoming one of these issues. For each resource, note if the resource is or is not currently available. If the resource is not currently available, what is necessary to acquire it? If the resource is currently available, what do you need to do to gain access to it?
- Compose a brief essay describing the "next steps" your group agreed to take before the next meeting. Consider the primary challenge the group is attempting to address. Explain how the "next steps" will positively impact the identified challenge and share some of the resources needed to move forward. Be sure to include the deadlines and follow up dates the group established in the description. The essay should be a minimum of one page in length and should not exceed two pages.
- Identify a barrier to addressing one of the critical issues the group discussed. The barrier may be a community barrier, a group barrier or even a personal barrier. Describe how this barrier may be overcome.
